Founder, Parallel Labs  ·  Professor & Project Director, University of Colorado  ·  National Geographic Explorer
Boulder, Colorado  ·  Sustainability Strategy  ·  Outdoor Industry  ·  Global Education & Development

Joel Hartter has spent more than two decades at the intersection of the outdoors, sustainability, and human development — not as a commentator, but as a builder. He has raised $30M to fund work that reaches 100,000+ people across ten countries, trained 20,000+ professionals from Fortune 500 boardrooms to East African villages, and built university programs that turned a 3,000% ROI in five years. He arrives at this table as someone who has already answered the question Tymmber Outdoor is asking.

From Mike
"I met Joel on LinkedIn. I had been researching and searching for someone I could talk to about the Outdoor Industry and Education and Economics — and I found Joel. I instantly connected with him and found him to be an incredible individual as well as a leader in the Outdoor Community. His background as an educator and global voice in the sustainability community is invaluable to the mission and vision of Tymmber Outdoor. When you are building something designed to change how people relate to the outdoors — and to themselves — you need people around you who have already done the hard work of proving it is possible. Joel is that person. I am so honored he would lend his voice and experience to our mission." — Mike Isaacs, Founder & CEO
Background  ·  The Career That Built the Framework

Joel Hartter's path did not begin in a classroom or a consulting firm. It began at the workbench — as a product development engineer at Bosch USA and a project engineer at Lampson International, building the systematic thinking that would later power everything he touched. When he pivoted to education and public policy at the University of New Hampshire, he brought that engineering discipline with him: he launched the university's first professional graduate program in sustainability and economic development, hit a 500% ROI in its first three years, and managed a $2M research portfolio spanning five countries. That is not an academic career arc. That is a founder's arc wearing academic credentials.

At the University of Colorado Boulder, that instinct scaled into something rare. As Executive Director of the university's flagship sustainability program, he grew it by 500%, managed a $15M P&L, led a team of 170, and built an in-house consulting firm that delivered 450,000+ hours of sustainability solutions valued at over $45M. Over a 12-year tenure, he led $20M+ in global projects advancing climate resilience across more than 10 countries and raised $30M to fund programs in climate, biodiversity, public health, and sustainable development — reaching 100,000+ people. His funders included the National Science Foundation, USAID, the CDC, National Geographic, the USDA, and the U.S. National Park Service and Forest Service.

"I help organizations align what they stand for with how they perform. That means strategy that gets executed, commitments that show up in the market, and internal alignment that drives results." — Joel Hartter

National Geographic  ·  The Field Work

Since 2012, Joel has carried the title of National Geographic Explorer — a designation earned in the field, not at a desk. His work in East Africa, specifically Uganda and Tanzania, centered on sustainable development, conservation, tourism, and public health at the community level. He directed programs supporting long-term resource management, local enterprise, and health system resilience, and launched a first-of-its-kind sustainability education initiative in partnership with a North American university. Before he ever advised a Fortune 500 company on ESG strategy, he was building schools, supporting libraries, and running a mobile health clinic serving 100,000+ people through Books Open the World, the 501(c)(3) he founded in Uganda in 2005. That is the origin story of a man who takes human development personally.

Today, as Founder and Principal of Parallel Labs, Joel works with leadership teams when growth, brand clarity, and internal alignment need to move faster and deliver more. His clients have ranged from Nike Women's and Volkswagen Group to the University of Arizona and Cornell University, from Microsoft Windows to Alterra Mountain Company. At Parallel Labs, his focus is the same it has always been: connecting mission, operations, and go-to-market strategy so that organizations can focus, differentiate, and lead. He is also a current member of the Volkswagen Group Sustainability Council, a Fellow at the UNH Carsey School of Public Policy, and Affiliate Faculty at the Colorado School of Mines' Humanitarian Engineering and Science program.

Why This Seat

Tymmber Outdoor is building the argument that time outside is the mechanism for human development — and that the right products, content, and community can make that argument at scale. Joel Hartter has been living that thesis for twenty-five years, at the intersection of the outdoor industry, sustainability, global education, and applied strategy. He has worked with the institutions that shape policy, the brands that reach consumers, and the communities that actually need the outcome. What he brings to this table is not an opinion on Tymmber's direction. It is a career's worth of proof that the direction is right.
